Why Title I Schools Deserve More Attention and How We Can All Help

Nearly 63 percent of public schools in the U.S. qualify for Title I funding. Texas, which has one of the largest school systems in the country, reflects that reality. In the 2023-24 school year alone, more than 6,500 Texas schools received Title I support, showing just how many campuses rely on federal aid to serve their students.

These schools often face challenges like limited resources and fewer enrichment opportunities. TEXAS YES is committed to helping close those gaps, and your support plays a vital role in making that possible.

Since 1998, TEXAS YES has provided students and teachers at Title I schools with school supply kits, classroom grants, and greater access to literacy. Our mission is simple: give children the tools they need to succeed in school today so they can achieve long-term academic success tomorrow.

What Are Title I Schools?

Title I schools are federally funded campuses designed to support students from low-income communities. This funding helps bridge equity gaps, but the need often outweighs the resources provided. Students at Title I schools may not have access to basic supplies, extracurricular programs, or enrichment opportunities that are more common in higher-income districts.

This is why TEXAS YES chooses to serve Title I schools specifically. These are the campuses where extra support can make the biggest difference.

Why They Need Our Support

Students at Title I schools face many challenges such as outdated supplies, limited classroom resources, and fewer opportunities outside of core academics. These challenges can make it harder for them to thrive, both in school and beyond.

That is where TEXAS YES steps in. Through our Box of Dreams program, we provide back-to-school kits filled with essential supplies, ensuring thousands of students start the year ready to learn. Our Little Locker Project extends that support beyond the classroom, stocking free book stations in communities where access to reading materials is limited. Together, these efforts give children the tools and confidence they need to dream bigger. And these are just a few examples. Our additional programs continue to push our mission forward across Texas.

How Can You Help?

  • Volunteer: Join us at events throughout the year, help restock Little Lockers, distribute school supplies, or read to classrooms through our YES Reading Partners program. See upcoming opportunities here.
  • Donate: The generosity of sponsors and community members makes our work possible. Every contribution counts, and even $25 can provide school supplies for three elementary students. If you’d like to give in other ways, consider hosting a book drive for our Little Locker Project to help put more books into the hands of young readers. • Spread the Word: Share this blog, our campaigns, or stories of impact on your social channels to help raise awareness for Title I schools and the students they serve.

Conclusion

Across Texas, thousands of students attend Title I schools where resources are limited but potential is limitless. By coming together through volunteering, donating, or simply sharing their story, we can ensure these students have what they need to learn, grow, and succeed.

When we invest in Title I schools, we invest in Texas’s future.
