Educational equality remains a pressing concern in Texas, particularly within Title I schools that serve a significant number of students from low-income families. These institutions face unique challenges that can impede student success.

 

Challenges in Title I Schools Across Texas

Title I schools in Texas confront several challenges that impact student achievement:

• Economic Disadvantage: A substantial portion of students in Texas public schools are economically disadvantaged. In the 2022–23 school year, 60.6% of students were identified as economically disadvantaged. (Texas Education Agency)
• Resource Allocation: Despite federal support, Title I schools often struggle with limited resources, affecting their ability to provide quality education. In the 2021–22 school year, approximately 63% of traditional public schools in the U.S. were Title I eligible, indicating a widespread need for additional support. TEXAS YES: Bridging the Gap

TEXAS YES is dedicated to closing the educational equality gap by supporting Title I students in San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Corpus Christi. Our mission is to equip students and teachers at Title I schools with essential resources, including school supply kits, grants, and greater access to literacy programs.

 

Our Key Programs & Impact

• Box of Dreams: Provides free school supply kits to every student from Kindergarten through 5th grade in selected Title I elementary schools. TEXAS YES has distributed 72,500 kits to 160 supported schools, working with 500 volunteers and 24 companies to make it happen.
• Little Locker Project: Improves literacy by placing lockers filled with books in accessible community locations. With 49 lockers in total, including 4 new additions this year, the program has reached 38,074 students. So far, 4,235 books and 3,018 craft kits have been distributed to encourage early reading habits.
• YES Grant: Supports innovative educational projects and resources in schools, furthering the mission of providing equitable access to learning materials.
• YES Reading Partners: Connects volunteers with students to foster literacy. Volunteers, like Samantha Garcia from St. Mary’s University, share about the experience:

“Volunteering to read to all elementary grade levels has been such a rewarding experience for me. I’ve enjoyed seeing how kids of different ages connect with stories in their unique ways. This experience has taught me how important it is to adapt my storytelling style to captivate each age group, and I love being able to bring joy and learning to children of all ages.”
