Why CommuniCare Supports TEXAS YES
This American Education Week, we’re celebrating a fundamental truth: it takes a village to raise a reader. In Texas, where approximately 43% of third-graders read below grade level, building strong community support systems around literacy isn’t just helpful – it’s essential.

Think about your favorite childhood book. Now imagine not having access to books at home or a library nearby. This reality faces many Texas students, particularly in Title 1 schools. That’s where our Little Lockers program steps in, bringing books directly into neighborhoods that need them most.
These community-based book-sharing stations work like your friendly neighborhood library, with a special twist – they’re strategically placed where families need them most. Parents stopping by after work, students walking home from school, or community members out for a stroll can easily borrow books to enjoy at home.
Our YES Reading Partners program creates special moments in classrooms across Texas by connecting dedicated volunteers with eager young readers. These volunteers don’t just read stories – they spark imagination, build confidence, and create meaningful connections that make reading come alive. Through one-on-one support, they’re helping transform students from hesitant readers into confident book lovers.
The beauty of YES Reading Partners lies in its simplicity: bringing caring community members into classrooms to share the joy of reading. Whether it’s sounding out challenging words together or celebrating reading milestones, these partnerships create lasting impacts that reach far beyond the classroom walls.
American Education Week reminds us that education thrives on collaboration. At TEXAS YES, we’re weaving together a network of support across San Antonio, Dallas-Fort Worth, Corpus Christi, and Austin. Our Little Lockers and YES Reading Partners programs work hand in hand – while Little Lockers ensure continuous access to reading materials, our Reading Partners provide the encouragement that turns reading from a task into a joy.
This American Education Week, we invite you to be part of our reading revolution. Whether it’s donating books to Little Lockers, volunteering as a Reading Partner, or spreading the word about these initiatives, every action helps strengthen our literacy network. Because when communities come together to support young readers, we’re not just teaching literacy – we’re building futures, one page at a time.
