Prepping for Success: FREE Back to School Events in Texas
TEXAS YES Project Reads to 170 Students During National Children's Authors and Illustrators Week
TEXAS YES and partnered elementary schools celebrated National Children’s Author and Illustrators week on February 7, by supporting 11 classrooms with volunteer readers.
With the help of our volunteers, we were able to support seven elementary schools and 170 students throughout the Harlandale and South San Antonio Independent School Districts. Our volunteers read a total of 18 fun and engaging books such as “Clifford’s Sports Day,” “Big Shark’s Valentine Surprise” and a variety of Dr. Suess titles. Afterward, students participated in group activities with our team of volunteers.
Dana Wrann, Executive Director at Leadership at SAISD, shared her experience as a volunteer.
“As a former educator, it was a joy to be back in a classroom reading to students! I visited three classrooms and had an array of books to choose from. One of the favorites was “Mr. Seahorse” by Eric Carle because we were able to learn about how different ‘underwater fathers’ took care of their babies. The book had visuals and page covers highlighting different habitats. We also loved a book about a dragon learning to control his fire. I was able to practice breathing techniques with the students and talk about managing big emotions. The students were engaged and wanted to share all of their interests with me. This experience was the highlight of my week!”
