It was a busy month once again for TEXAS YES! This past October, the leading educational nonprofit in Texas was hard at work unveiling Little Lockers to four San Antonio elementary schools in the South San Independent School District: Athens Elementary School, Price Elementary School, Frank Madla Elementary School, and Miguel Carrillo Jr. Elementary School. Each Little Locker provides books and activities for students throughout the year to boost community literacy. TEXAS YES was excited to work with Florinda Castillo, principal at Frank Madla Elementary School.

Principal Castillo shared about the impact TEXAS YES and their new Little Locker has made at her elementary school.

Q: How long have you been working in education? Tell us about your journey.

A: I have been working in education for 28 years. I started off in New Mexico and then moved to San Antonio. I have been with the South San School District for 26 years. It is a great district; we are all one big family.

Q: Can you share your experience at the Little Locker unveiling and why literacy programs are so important to the community?

A: I love to read so I would love for my students to love to read. It’s hard for many parents in our neighborhood to take their child to a nearby library which is at least 15 minutes away so having our Little Locker is great for our community.

Q: What are you hoping your students will gain from having a Little Locker?

A: I hope our students will gain the love for reading and knowing that reading can take you to a whole other world. By having this Little Locker they can come and exchange their book any time – day or night.

Q: What would you like others to know about Frank Madla’s partnership with TEXAS YES?

A: TEXAS YES has helped out our community so much by donating the Little Locker. This Little Locker will open up so many doors for students who love to read and who are going to love to read. Thank you all!
