If Classrooms Could Talk: What Texas Classrooms Need Most and Why It Matters

If classrooms across Texas could speak for themselves, they would tell stories of hardworking teachers, determined students, and communities doing their best to support education. But they would also talk about what is still missing: books, school supplies, educational resources, and consistent support systems that help students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

Across Texas, schools continue facing challenges tied to literacy development, classroom funding, and access to learning materials. These needs directly impact students’ confidence, engagement, and long-term academic success.

The TEXAS YES Project continues to help bridge those gaps through programs designed to support students and classrooms across the state. Since 1998, TEXAS YES has supported Texas students through literacy initiatives, school supply distributions, and educational resource programs.

Understanding What Texas Classrooms Need Most

Many classrooms across Texas face similar challenges:

  • Limited classroom funding
  • Lack of access to books and reading materials
  • Students without essential school supplies
  • Growing academic and classroom support needs

Literacy remains one of the most important areas of support. Programs like the Little Locker Project help provide free access to books and educational resources for students and families across Texas communities. TEXAS YES has helped unveil 55 Little Lockers across the state, impacting more than 24,333 students.

Students also benefit from having the supplies needed to fully participate in the classroom. Through the Box of Dreams program, TEXAS YES helps distribute school supply kits filled with essential classroom items like notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, and paper.

Why These Needs Matter

Educational success should not depend on a student’s zip code. Access to books, school supplies, and classroom resources help students stay engaged and prepared throughout the school year.

Strong literacy skills also influence nearly every stage of a student’s academic journey. Programs focused on reading access encourage confidence, stronger learning habits, and long-term educational growth. At the same time, school supplies can remove barriers that prevent students from feeling prepared in the classroom.

How Community Support Makes a Difference

Community partnerships continue to play a major role in supporting Texas students and schools through programs like Little Lockers and Box of Dreams. While the Little Locker Project continues expanding access to books and educational reading support for students across Texas, Box of Dreams helps provide school supplies to Title I elementary schools across the state. In 2025, TEXAS YES initiatives directly impacted more than 70,000 students throughout Texas by helping provide essential school supplies and educational resources to classrooms and families in need. Looking ahead to 2026, TEXAS YES is projected to impact more than 83,500 students this August by providing free school supplies to students at over 178 schools across Texas. None of this would be possible without the continued support of our communities, who volunteer, donate, and support our mission.

Conclusion

TEXAS YES continues to create a meaningful impact across Texas communities by providing students with the books, supplies, and educational resources they need to succeed. If classrooms could talk, they would ask for continued investment in students, literacy support, and educational resources that help every child succeed.
